Initial description: I tried to mimic the location of the center of the pink squares. I made it look like the ones in the example. I believe the rule is there has to be a plus sign in the square and then it must extend out.
Final description: I thought it was to ensure that there was a cross in the middle of the blue square. I get that these two blue squares were closer so I didn't think it mattered but I guess I was wrong. There must have to be a certain amount of space between them as well.
